What are some tips for eating healthier when we eat out?

A couple enjoying a meal at an outdoor cafe. Sunlight can be seen in the background but the seating area is shaded.

Q. My wife and I are trying to eat healthier. We do well at home, but we eat out often. That's when we lose it. Any tips?

A. I know the feeling. My intentions are good, but I often break my own rules.

You and you wife should make a pact on what you will order before entering the restaurant. If you have the time, check out the restaurant's menu online to narrow down your choices.

Once inside, here are some ideas to help limit the calories, bad fats, and simple sugars.

Say no to the bread and butter. (Personally, this one is my downfall. But I do ask for olive oil instead of butter.)

Order salad. Go light on the dressing. Oil and vinegar is a great choice, but it can get boring.

Get two appetizers, and split one main dish. When my wife and I stick to this plan, we rarely need to order a second main dish.

Sauce on the side. You tend to use less if you need to dip to add taste. (It also creates a nicer presentation when the entree is not swimming in a puddle.)

Don't even look at the desert menu. Instead, pick up some dark chocolate on the way home. A few bites top off a meal beautifully.
