My grandson has muscular dystrophy and is a “manager” for his high school football team. He is responsible for washing/drying uniforms, cleaning equipment etc. He is often in the locker room with the players under crowded conditions as well as out on the field. Do you think this holds a particular risk for him because of his illness?

Yes, I would think that is a risk. Players should be washing their own uniforms.
