By the way, doctor: What can I do to lower my CRP level?
What can I do to lower my CRP level?
Q My CRP was 4 in April and rose to 5 in June. I've taken niacin to lower my LDL. It didn't work for that, but did increase my HDL and lower my triglycerides. My question: besides taking a statin, what can I do to lower my CRP?
A In the early 2000s, C-reactive protein (CRP) has grown increasingly prominent in discussions of cardiovascular health. It's a naturally occurring substance that can be easily and inexpensively measured in the blood. Higher levels are associated with a greater risk for heart disease and — possibly — other major diseases, such as hypertension and diabetes. Levels also go up in response to various infections or inflammatory conditions, even something as straightforward as a sinus infection.
