Building a Strong Family System

Family dynamics often change when one member — or more than one — is experiencing mental health issues. Roles, relationships, and interactions within a family all may be shaped and influenced by those challenges.
Supportive family relationships can help buffer strains and stress around mental health. Establishing routines, setting expectations, communicating clearly, and managing sibling dynamics can all help the overall mental wellness of a family.
What are family dynamics?
Family dynamics refer to the way members of a family, who all play different roles, interact with one another. Some dynamics are secure and supportive while others are stressful. Dynamics can change over time. Various factors influence family dynamics, such as levels of care and support, arguments, financial stress, or illness. Family dynamics can affect someone’s mental well-being — for better or for worse — in both the short and long term.
