Diet matters after a heart attack

An analysis of two large international studies has confirmed that a diet high in vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains, and fish can significantly lower the risk of a repeat heart attack or stroke. As detailed in Circulation, individuals who were faithful to a heart-healthy diet after their first heart attack or stroke lowered their risk of another heart attack by 14%, stroke by 28%, heart failure by 28%, and death from cardiovascular causes by 35%, compared with people who ate the poorest diet. "These data suggest that at least a 20% recurrence of cardiovascular disease could be avoided by adhering to a healthy diet," the authors said.
