Ask the Doctor: Is the weight-loss drug Contrave safe?

Question: I need to lose weight. I heard about a drug called Contrave. Does it work? Is it safe?

Answer: Contrave is a combination of two drugs that were FDA approved many years ago for other conditions. The two drugs are naltrexone and bupropion.

Doctors prescribe naltrexone to help people with alcoholism and narcotic addiction. Bupropion is used to treat depression and seasonal affective disorder. It is also prescribed to help people stop smoking. Neither drug alone is approved for weight loss.
