Ask the doctor: Do I still need vaccines?

Q. I am 70 and have had all the usual childhood diseases and shots. What immunizations do I need now?

A. If you are otherwise healthy, there are only a few routine immunizations recommended for women in your age group:

Pneumococcal vaccine—this vaccine protects against pneumonia caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, an infection that can be fatal in older people or those with weakened immune systems. Pneumococcal pneumonia can occur as a result of a viral upper respiratory infection like the flu.
