Travelers: Sites to see before you go

The far reaches of the earth aren’t so far anymore as we globe-trot to Africa, Asia, and South America.

If you’re planning such a trip, you need information about exactly which shots to get and other health precautions. The single best source of information and advice is the travel section of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Web site (www.cdc.gov/travel). It has general tips (use the search function to find the all-purpose traveler’s health kit). You can also easily look up health advisories and immunization requirements specific to the place you’re visiting. The CDC does a good job of keeping the information current.

Some hospitals have special international travel clinics where you can get your shots. But review the CDC recommendations with your doctor; he should be able to provide you with most of the shots, and possibly some additional advice. If you need a yellow fever vaccination, you’ll probably need to go to one of the special clinics.

Before you go, you might also take a look at the precautions posted on the State Department Web site (www.travel.state.gov). Simple steps like filling out the emergency contact page on the inside of your passport could be important if you become ill or have an accident. The State Department also suggests getting a letter from a doctor if you have a medical condition. The letter should list the medications you’re taking. Be sure it includes generic, not just the brand, names of the drugs.
